What’s the difference between custom and semi-custom websites?A custom website design is created as a unique solution in response to client input and preferences. Semi-custom designs are developed in advance to meet the needs of specific online marketing and communications niches. A semi-custom website is then carefully tailored to an organization’s unique branding in such things as colors, fonts, images, navigation wording, and use of icons and call-outs. Because their behind-the-scenes structure and design are not created from scratch, semi-custom web projects typically cost less and require fewer hours of the client’s own time.
Every situation is unique. But as a rule of thumb, the timeline for a medium-size website typically extends over a period of two to three months. Larger, more complex projects usually take longer. The major steps that go into a site design and development project include:
- consulting on site planning
- drafting and revising a new site plan
- custom site design or full branding alignment if you choose a semi-custom design package
- site build-out
- support for updating, drafting, and uploading site content
- designing, building and testing online forms and calls-to-action
- optional site translation into languages other than English
- site revisions, testing, and proofing
- site meta and schema markup
Every web project is unique. However, as a rule of thumb expect a project cost of between $3,500 and $5,500 for a smaller senior living website using a semi-custom design; between $5,500 and $10,000 for a small custom project or larger semi-custom site; and more than $10,000 for one large website with custom features or a family of related websites for multiple care locations. Your web service provider should provide a firm quote for your web project based on the size and complexity of the project.
Every project is unique. However, at IlluminAge, a semi-custom website design starts at $3,500 for up to 15 pages, and a custom website starts at $5,500. Costs are adjusted based on the scope of your project. If you are doing multiple websites for a multi-facility organization, we offer discounts for economies of scale.
Factors that will influence a project’s cost include:
- anticipated number of pages
- expected features, such as e-commerce, calendar plug-in, blog, photo gallery, animations, scope of work, etc.
- whether the design is semi-custom or custom
- and a good faith estimate of the professional design and development time the project is expected to require.
Modern, up-to-date websites have responsive design built in, making them display equally well on all devices, from large wall-mounted monitors, down to tablets and smartphones. Today, you can expect up nearly half of your users to be accessing your site via their mobile devices. Therefore, it’s critical the website functions perfectly on that device to ensure a fantastic user experience – enhancing your site’s ability to convert users into leads. Current accessibility standards require font size options, graphics and colors that are readable by users of all ages. Every website should be created using current best practices in accessibility in general accordance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, levels A and AA. These have been adopted by W3C (the World Wide Web Consortium), as part of its Web Accessibility Initiative.
Site structure should also include specific accessibility content that supports ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliance, including:

A well-written website design RFP does not have to be long or complicated. In fact, being brief and including what’s most important to your decision-making process is best. Most web design RFPs will cover:
