When IlluminAge opened its doors back in 1989, our main focus was on creating printed educational material for healthcare organizations throughout the country. One of these booklets, A Matter of Rights, was first released in 1991 and has been updated continuously since. It remains an important resource for long-term care facilities that participate in Medicare and Medicaid.

We recently updated A Matter of Rights once again. The 2017 edition reflects CMS’ new Long-Term Care Conditions of Participation (42 CFR § 483). We’ve also given the booklet a more user-friendly format and contemporary feel.

The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Law (OBRA ’87) requires nursing homes to “promote and protect the rights of each resident.” Nursing homes are required to have written policies covering the rights of residents and provide them with this information. A Matter of Rights fulfills this obligation in a convenient and welcoming way. Professionally designed and written, the booklet uses photos, concise copy and large type to make the book very user friendly. It contains everything a new resident needs to know about their rights and responsibilities.

Covered topics include:

  • Dignity and Respect
  • A Safe, Clean Environment
  • No Discrimination
  • Care Planning
  • Advance Directives
  • Freedom of Choice
  • Privacy and Confidentiality
  • Right to Be Kept Informed
  • Protection of Money and Property
  • Charges for Extra Services
  • Visits and Communications
  • Transfer and Discharge
  • Medicare and Medicaid
  • Grievances
  • Resident Responsibilities
  • Role of a Resident’s Representative

This informative booklet supports our clients in a very important way: by helping demonstrate their commitment to respectful resident care in an environment that is safe, welcoming, and dedicated to their well-being.
